The four-day conference attracted 128 papers and 276 posters presented by 550 researchers from almost every country in Europe, plus the United States, Canada, China, Russia, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Jordan, Iran, South Africa, Peru, and Colombia. This event was a wonderful, unforgettable experience thanks to the participation of so many people and thanks to the amazing conference organizers.

Overview | Conference Program | Participant List & Emails

The Third International Self-Determination Theory conference was held from May 24-27th, 2007 at the University of Toronto’s Hart House. Over 300 people from 23 countries attended the conference (see conference participants), where 71 papers were presented, and two poster sessions were held that included over 140 posters (see conference program for presenters and posters). The presentations included an overview of the theory by SDT founders, Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, as well as keynote addresses by several invited senior keynote speakers. The research was presented in papers and posters that covered diverse areas, including motivation in development, education, work, relationships, sports, health, medicine, psychotherapy, and cross-cultural applications.

In SDT, students are viewed as essential to the growth and development of the theory. Besides presenting work, the conference was a unique opportunity for students to interact with established researchers and develop their skills in an optimally supportive environment. To further enhance this opportunity, workshops were held in which students were able to connect with junior and senior researchers in their area of interest, dialogue about current research, and develop research collaborations.

The Second International Conference on Self-Determination Theory was held at the University of Ottawa in Canada from May 21-23, 2004. One hundred and eighty-eight participants from 13 countries attended. The countries represented included Japan, Korea, Israel, Norway, Italy, and several from Western Europe. Forty-nine faculty members presented talks on their SDT research, and more than 50 posters were presented, primarily by graduate students.

The list of talks and posters presented at the conference are shown on the symposia page, and a list of all participants with their affiliations and emails appears on the participants page.

In April, 1999, the first international Self-Determination Theory Conference was held at the University of Rochester. More than forty active self-determination researchers from eighteen universities in the United States, Canada, Germany, and Israel convened at the University of Rochester to present their work, share ideas, and discuss future research directions.

People came with a shared vocabulary, a shared set of concepts, a shared system of thought, and a shared familiarity with an extensive research literature. This allowed everyone to begin immediately discussing important and penetrating issues. Each person had been engaged in her or his unique research program–on values, psychosocial medical interventions, self-regulatory styles, coping processes, the self, organizational dynamics, and so forth–and each of the research programs was briefly reviewed and discussed in relation to the others. Some issues were discussed by several researchers; others were addressed by only one or two. In each case, the issues were the basis for rich and stimulating dialogue, and some led to the specification of empirical questions that are already under examination in various labs.

So exciting were the presentations and discussions that the participants decided it was time to prepare a volume that would draw together the results of several research programs as they relate to and have been organized by SDT. The Handbook of Self-Determination Research , edited by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan and published by the University of Rochester Press in April 2002, is the result. It summarizes the research programs of these social, personality, clinical, developmental, and applied psychologists who have a shared belief in the importance of self-determination for understanding basic motivational processes and for solving pressing real-world problems.

Nineteen chapters, including an overview of self-determination theory, present the current state of the research in this scientifically rigorous, yet highly relevant, approach to studying human motivation. Some chapters deal with basic theoretical issues while others deal with the application of the theory to various life domains, including parenting, education, health care, organizations, environmentalism, and physical activity.
